Mudroom Storage Ideas for Busy Charlotte Households

A mudroom is a promise that the kitchen counter will not be the drop zone. In most Charlotte-area homes it is not a room at all but the hall between the garage and the kitchen, which is fine — a run of built-in lockers along one wall does most of the job. The ideas below scale from a full room down to that hall.

One locker per person

Common guidance is 15 to 18 inches of locker width per person — a coat, a bag, a hook for the thing they carry. Full-height dividers keep one child's chaos from spreading. Count the people, then count the inches; 60 inches of wall is three or four lockers, not five.

A bench with something under it

Seat height around 17 to 19 inches suits adults. Open cubbies below dry shoes faster than closed drawers; a lift seat adds hidden storage for out-of-season items.

Hooks at two heights

Hooks kids can reach get used. A row at adult height and a row at child height inside each locker, plus big hooks near the door for wet things in summer.

Three layouts by hall width

• Under 42 inches wide: shallow lockers (12–14 inches deep) with hooks, no bench, cubbies at the floor. The walkway stays a walkway.
• 42–60 inches wide: full-depth lockers with a bench on one side; nothing on the opposite wall.
• A real room: lockers on one wall, a bench and cubbies on another, a closet or tall cabinet for coats and gear, and a counter if the laundry shares the space.
